Summer 2025- Beeworthy buzz issue no. 11

A reflection on what was

Summer time is such a full time on the farm. The land is bursting forward with life, the days are long, the sun is strong. And come August, that overdrive gear we kicked into back in May, is burning hot. It is always wise to slow down when the days start to get shorter. To take more and more moments to bask in what is wonderful. And also pause to see where things have gotten out of hand.

Some folks say not to make important decisions in August, when we are the most tired and burnt out. But I say it is the most important time of year to plan for. Last season, August 2024, I asked myself, “how did I get so tired?” I understand it is important to hustle, but not like that.

I can only speak for my truth when I say that we were investing an incredible amount of time and labor into designing. There was no profit in our bouquets, but they brought people joy and fulfillment. Some more than others, as I was personally having a hard time seeing how I could leave my off-farm job to continue a hustle that wasn’t even something I enjoyed.

I paused and listened to what was true for me instead. I turned down the volume on the stories I was playing to please others and heard some important guidance on what I was meant to bring forth. I heard that I needed to bring people into the space at BeeWorthy Farms. That I needed to devote some of my time to growing herbal medicine. And that I needed to remain strong to nurture a foundation of flowers that will sustain the business.

Today, I am proud to say that I have made leaps toward answering this call. Each and every leap was just as difficult as the last, even the smallest decisions feel so crucial and important. It requires the most honest conversations, the most presence into each day, and the most love I can reorient myself towards. It requires me let go over and over, to meet myself where I’m at, to honor my voice and needs, and to gently put down the masks and roles I was playing to fulfill other’s hopes for me.

We all walk around this world, playing out a script of who we think we should be. And I wonder how often we take a good long look at who is actually writing that narrative. Now is the time, as we shift into summer, to consider slowing down. To utilize the fullness and abundance of these months to look all around and check-in with how we are doing. Where are we leaking energy? What dark spaces within us need some of this light? Where do we need a little more compassion and grace?

Happenings & Updates from the Farm

  • Summer 2024- Flowers to Jimbos, OB People, Cardiff Tiny Farm, Fox Point, Native Poppy, Inecui, Bloomers, and all our event florists. It is not wonder it buzzed on by without a newsletter! BeeWorthy was growing flowers to overflow our coolers with a small but mighty team.

  • Fall 2024 - Changing course. BeeWorthy set aside bouquet designing and settled into a winter of making the business right sized.

  • Winter 2025 - We reduced our growing space so that we could invest meaningfully into the spaces that we could tend to. We built resiliency into the farm by improving our workshop area.

  • Spring 2025 - We were awarded a $10,000 grant from UCSD’s Growing Equities program to expand our community apothecary and offer herbalism classes to our community.

We wouldn’t be where we are without all the help of our friends and community. Special thanks to these fine folks/organizations.

  • This year we brought on a new team member, Jordyn. Her bright spark brings hope to each day. She is learning by leaps and bounds and is well aligned with the vision to bring the most bee loved flowers and herbs out to our community.

  • Over 12 years ago, I met Damiana at Wild Willow Farm where we learned about herbs alongside each other. That relationship has resprouted here at BeeWorthy Farms with Damiana bringing her passion for herbalism, mutual aid, and collaboration to the land. It is a gift to have her playing in the garden every Monday.

  • If you noticed some snazzy instagram videos, we can together thank Simone Stivi for her fun and creative spirit she brought to BeeWorthy. We learned so much from each other and I am incredibly grateful for her guiding light when things felt hard.

  • We got the grant!! UCSD awarded us $10,000 through their Growing Equities program. We are thrilled to be acknowledged for the vision, dedication, and hard work we bring to the San Diego farming community. This grant will support the foundation of our community apothecary and support more herbalism classes and workshops at the farm!

  • A special and deeply heartfelt thank you to Onnalee for all of her time and hard work nurturing the roots of BeeWorthy Farms. Your warmth is missed and I am so grateful for the joy you brought to folks through flowers throughout San Diego!
